If music can calm a restless spirit, it can certainly improve the mood of stressed airline travelers.
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is putting that idea to the test with the Sea-Tac Airport Music Initiative, a collaboration between the Port of Seattle, the Seattle Music Commission and PlayNetwork.
Launched in late January, the initiative highlights the Pacific Northwest’s rich musical culture while aiming to make the travel experience more enjoyable for passengers at Sea-Tac. Music streams through speakers and displays in the terminal, and the program extends to a web radio player available via the airport’s free WiFi. A multi-platform web player optimized for smartphones gives users control to browse multiple genres, explore curated “best track” selections, view album artwork and share favorites through social media.
The goal is both practical and cultural: to reduce traveler stress and waiting-room tension, and to introduce visitors to regional artists and sounds. By integrating music into common areas and offering a digital player, the airport provides passengers with options—whether they want background ambiance while waiting for a flight or a more active listening experience on their own device.
Passengers can access the music directly on-site through the airport’s WiFi, choose from a variety of playlists and customize their listening based on mood or genre. The program’s curated playlists showcase a broad range of Northwest talent, from established acts to emerging performers, offering airport visitors a concise listening introduction to the region’s music scene.
In addition to improving passenger comfort, the initiative supports local musicians by giving them exposure to a diverse audience that includes both residents and travelers from around the world. Featuring local artists in public spaces like airports helps build recognition and can lead listeners to further explore the region’s music beyond their time at Sea-Tac.
Overall, the Sea-Tac Airport Music Initiative blends customer service with cultural promotion: it creates a calmer, more pleasant environment for travelers while celebrating the city’s musical identity. The combination of physical installations and easy-to-use digital players makes the program accessible to a wide range of passengers and listening preferences.
