Mar de Cortés International Airport (PPE) in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, will begin offering scheduled international and domestic flights later this year when Aeroméxico starts service connecting Las Vegas (LAS) and Hermosillo (HMO) via Puerto Peñasco. Starting June 20, the airline will operate two weekly flights, on Sundays and Thursdays, using Embraer E145 aircraft.
Opened to private flights in November 2009, Mar de Cortés was the first privately funded airport in Mexico. It has facilities capable of accommodating aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 767, and airport management is actively in talks with carriers such as Alaska Airlines and American Airlines about adding further routes. The introduction of Aeroméxico’s scheduled service marks a significant step toward expanding the airport’s commercial operations and improving connectivity for both local residents and visitors to the Sonoran coastline.
With these new connections, Puerto Peñasco aims to attract more leisure and business travelers by providing convenient access from major U.S. and Mexican cities. The twice-weekly service is expected to complement existing private flight traffic and support the region’s tourism development, offering travelers an additional option for reaching the popular beachfront destination.
