From HoJos to High-End Hotels: How to Upgrade Your Stay

There’s no way to know how the Pilgrims would react to the bold, contemporary design of Connecticut’s JHouse Greenwich boutique hotel, but the property’s attentive service and upscale amenities would likely win them over. Once a Howard Johnson’s off the freeway, the building has been fully transformed with sustainability and modern convenience in mind. Reclaimed wood and roof tiles made from recycled tires reflect an eco-conscious approach, while in-room iPad controls let guests manage lights, television, thermostat and curtains and access hotel and local information without printed materials.

The hotel’s mezzanine hosts the Art-otel Project, a rotating series of exhibits featuring emerging artists curated by Douglas Lederman of Schermerhorn 9 Art Advisory. All proceeds from any artwork sales go directly to the artists, supporting the local creative community.

Guestrooms—85 in total—blend luxury and technology. Marble-lined bathrooms, 55-inch LED televisions, complimentary WiFi and continental breakfast provide comfort and convenience, while Malin+Goetz bath products and Frette linens add refined touches. Many rooms include private balconies that overlook landscaped gardens and a pool, offering a calm retreat just two miles from Stamford and about 40 minutes from Manhattan.

Dining at the property centers on eleven14 Kitchen, recipient of a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. Executive Chef Francois Kwaku-Dongo, who previously served as executive chef at Wolfgang Puck’s Spago in West Hollywood, leads the kitchen. His upbringing on a cocoa farm in West Africa informs the hotel’s on-site confection shop, The Chocolate Lab, where chocolate creations reflect his roots and culinary expertise. Guests can also enjoy live jazz in eleven14 Kitchen every Wednesday night beginning at 7 p.m., adding a lively evening option for visitors and locals alike.

With its combination of modern design, sustainable materials, high-tech in-room features and locally minded arts and dining programs, JHouse Greenwich presents a distinctive boutique-hotel experience that balances style, comfort and community support.
