DFW Airport Expands Duty-Free Shops and Shopping Options

Dallas Fort/Worth International Airport is upgrading the passenger experience with a new luxury duty-free shopping concept in Terminal D. DFW partnered with TRG Duty Free Joint Venture to design and operate six distinct retail locations totaling nearly 20,000 square feet, aimed at serving the airport’s growing international traffic.

“Terminal D hosts more than 7 million international travelers each year, and as our international profile grows those customers look for world-class experiences and amenities,” said Sean Donohue, CEO, DFW Airport. “The new duty-free experience at DFW will transform Terminal D and bring our customers an unparalleled level of luxury and service with high-end brands, VIP concierge services, cutting-edge technology and local flair.”

The new duty-free complex will combine global designer brands with local Texas retailers. International labels named for the project include Ferragamo, Gucci, Dior, Chanel, Lancôme and Burberry, while regional vendors such as Bohlin Company, known for western clothing and accessories, and Fort Worth-based TX Whiskey will provide local flavor. The retail mix will offer clothing, cosmetics, electronics, leather goods, jewelry, handbags, wine and spirits, and specialty foods—presented in a premium, traveler-friendly environment.

Ken Buchanan, executive vice president of revenue management for DFW Airport, emphasized the goal of blending luxury and technology with a sense of place: “When looking for a duty-free retailer, we asked for a blend of international couture, state-of-the-art technology, luxurious services — all while capturing the spirit and beauty of Texas. TRG’s winning proposal delivered with a concept that we know will surprise and delight our passengers. We’re excited to know their vision will soon come to life in Terminal D.”

The design emphasizes high-end customer service, including VIP concierge options, integrated digital tools to streamline shopping and checkout, and curated displays that highlight both international brands and Texas-made products. The six shops are arranged to create an easy-flow shopping experience for arriving and departing international travelers, with clear signage, accessible layouts and distinct brand zones to help shoppers find items quickly.

Beyond merchandise, the duty-free rollout seeks to enhance the overall passenger journey: thoughtful lighting and materials, comfortable seating and lounge pockets for companions, and dedicated areas for sampling perfumes, cosmetics and spirits. Technology features—such as mobile payment options, interactive product information and inventory visibility—are intended to reduce friction and support fast-paced travel schedules.

DFW Airport positions the Terminal D duty-free program as a strategic investment in its international gateway, reinforcing the airport’s competitiveness for global routes and premium travelers. By pairing established luxury houses with authentic local vendors, the airport aims to offer visitors both the expected prestige of duty-free shopping and a distinctive taste of Texas.

All six retail locations are scheduled to be installed and operational by the end of 2016.
