United Airlines Seeks Approval to Launch Flights to South Africa

Last week, United Airlines filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation to launch a new nonstop service between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Cape Town International Airport (CPT). The proposed route would begin in December and operate three times per week.

The planned nonstop connection will shorten overall travel time by more than four hours compared with existing one-stop options. United intends to deploy a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the route, configured with 48 United Polaris business class seats, 88 Economy Plus seats, and 116 standard economy seats.

According to the proposed schedule, flights would depart Newark at 8:30 p.m. and arrive in Cape Town at approximately 6:00 p.m. the following day. Return service would leave Cape Town at 8:50 p.m., landing in Newark at about 5:45 a.m. the next morning.

“We are always looking at ways to expand our industry-leading international route network to offer our customers more convenient options. We’re thrilled to announce the addition of Africa to our global route offering,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s vice president of international network. “This new flight will provide customers with the only nonstop service between the United States and Cape Town.”

If approved, the route would create a direct, time-saving link between the northeastern United States and South Africa’s leading tourist and business destination. The nonstop schedule offers more efficient connections for both leisure travelers heading to Cape Town’s beaches and attractions and business passengers seeking shorter transit times on transcontinental travel.

Using the 787-9 Dreamliner supports a balance of passenger comfort and fuel-efficient long-haul performance. The Polaris business cabin provides lie-flat seats and enhanced amenities for travelers requiring premium service, while Economy Plus offers additional legroom for those who want extra space without upgrading to business class.

United’s proposal adds to growing airline interest in transcontinental and intercontinental nonstop routes that reduce travel time and simplify itineraries. If the Department of Transportation grants the application and slot availability and operational approvals align, customers could see tickets become available in the coming months for December departures.

Travelers planning trips between the U.S. East Coast and South Africa should watch for final government approvals and official schedule announcements from United. Once confirmed, the nonstop service would be the only direct air link between Newark and Cape Town, delivering a faster, more convenient travel option for both markets.
