Virgin Voyages Begins Construction of Its First Cruise Ship

Virgin Voyages recently offered a first look at the three new ships scheduled to debut in 2020 during an unveiling event at an Italian shipyard.

Tom McAlpin, president and CEO of Virgin Voyages, said the vessels will be crafted with close attention to detail and a materiality inspired by superyachts. The design aims to create a more intimate connection to the sea: 86 percent of cabins will include a sea terrace and 93 percent will have an ocean view. “Virgin Voyages is creating a sophisticated ship and a transformational experience that offers our sailors a place where rejuvenating day-life meets exciting nightlife and everything in between,” McAlpin said.

The line’s concept is intentionally “adult by design,” with no passengers under 18 permitted aboard. Exterior styling features a silver hull with bold red accents and a mermaid motif on the bow, giving the ships a distinctive, modern profile.

While many operational details are still being finalized, Virgin Voyages is opening access to an initial voyage presale for travelers who place a refundable $500 deposit. That presale provides early booking priority and more information as itineraries and onboard offerings are confirmed.

Beyond the statistics on cabins and the adult-only policy, the debut emphasizes a hospitality approach focused on refined public spaces, varied dining options, curated nightlife, and wellness-minded daytime programming. The superyacht inspiration suggests high-quality finishes, thoughtful public areas that promote social interaction, and staterooms designed to maximize sea views and private outdoor space.

For travelers interested in this new entrant to the cruise market, the presale deposit is the primary means of securing early access. Additional details about itineraries, onboard experiences, and pricing will be released closer to the ships’ launch dates, allowing prospective sailors to evaluate cabin types, voyage lengths, and the full range of amenities before final booking.

Virgin Voyages’ announcement signals an effort to differentiate through design and a targeted adult audience, positioning the ships as an alternative to traditional cruise offerings with an emphasis on contemporary style, ocean-facing accommodations, and a blend of relaxation and nightlife tailored to adult travelers.
