On Sept. 24, Chicago’s South Loop welcomed its first rooftop bar with the opening of VU atop 133 East Cermak. Perched 22 stories above McCormick Place, VU Rooftop Bar is the latest concept from James Beard–nominated Concentrics Restaurant Group and offers roughly 13,000 square feet of combined indoor and outdoor space.
Visitors can take in sweeping views of the lake and downtown skyline while moving between distinct areas, including a solarium bar, a boardroom, a private karaoke room and a lively club bar. The layout is designed to accommodate anything from an intimate drinks reception to a larger social event.
The rooftop’s culinary program is driven by Executive Chef Nolan Narut, who presents ingredient-forward dishes and curated plates meant to pair with a thoughtfully selected beverage list. A sommelier-curated wine selection and locally sourced cocktails give guests plenty of options for a refined cocktail hour or a full meal.
Design is a central feature at VU. A 40-stool main bar anchors the space, and multiple seating zones create flexible experiences throughout the venue. In cooler months, the firepit lounge offers a cozy setting, while the East terrace houses a solarium bar enclosed with retractable glass walls that provide an indoor warmth with an al fresco feel when needed. In warmer weather, those walls open to deliver a true outdoor experience.
The West terrace centers on a dramatic water-and-fire fountain surrounded by a comfortable outdoor lounge, all framed by Chicago’s iconic skyline. Together, these elements create distinct points of focus for guests and memorable moments against the city backdrop.
