Imagine This: Stunning Tips to Bring Photos to Life

If you want to sharpen your photography skills — or simply want an excuse to escape to a tropical beach — consider a weeklong workshop running Sept. 14–19 on the island of St. Lucia. Led by internationally acclaimed photographer Joe McNally and photo book author Rafael Concepcion, the workshop offers intensive, hands-on instruction at the scenic Jade Mountain and Anse Chastanet resorts.

The program focuses on practical, real-world techniques: understanding and shaping the language of light, making the most of compact flash equipment, composing stronger frames and portraits, and learning how to travel light with essential camera gear. Instruction balances classroom-style discussion with on-location shoots so participants can immediately apply new skills in a variety of island settings.

Participants begin the week by establishing personal objectives and undergoing a portfolio review to identify strengths and areas for growth. Throughout the workshop, McNally and Concepcion provide demonstrations and guided practice, then give constructive critiques to help photographers refine their visual voice. In addition to technical and creative guidance, the week includes discussions of business strategies for photographers who want to turn their work into a sustainable pursuit.

The workshop culminates in a dramatic “flambo” sunset shoot on the beach, featuring controlled fires, models and creative flash lighting with gels — an opportunity to practice lighting control, color balance and working with models under dynamic conditions. This immersive exercise highlights how to use artificial light to enhance natural scenes and produce striking images.

Attendance is limited to guests staying at Jade Mountain and Anse Chastanet. Tuition for the workshop is $1,812.45, which includes processing fees; accommodations and transportation are not included. Each participant will also receive a complimentary copy of Joe McNally’s Language of Light DVD to reinforce techniques covered during the week.
