Etihad Regional Launches Zurich Flights: New Routes & Schedules

Etihad Airways has announced the launch of Etihad Regional, a Switzerland-based regional carrier operated in partnership with Darwin Airline. Headquartered in Lugano with a primary hub in Geneva (GVA), Etihad Regional aims to strengthen regional connections across Europe and link them to Etihad Airways’ expanding international network.

James Hogan, president and CEO of Etihad Airways, said Etihad Regional creates an opportunity to enhance important regional routes while offering travelers more choice and greater convenience. The carrier is built on a partnership model, selecting partners like Darwin Airline who share a commitment to high-quality service and reliable operations.

Currently serving 15 destinations in Europe, Etihad Regional plans to expand its network significantly, targeting 34 destinations by mid-2014. As part of the strategic alliance, and subject to regulatory approval, Etihad Airways intends to acquire a 33 percent stake in Darwin Airline. This investment would make Darwin the seventh member of Etihad’s growing international alliance and deepen coordination between regional and long-haul services.

The partnership is positioned to deliver improved connectivity for passengers traveling between regional European markets and Etihad’s global routes. By leveraging Darwin Airline’s local expertise and Etihad’s international reach, Etihad Regional is set to offer more seamless connections, coordinated schedules, and enhanced service standards for both business and leisure travelers.

Etihad Regional’s hub in Geneva will serve as a strategic link for travelers to access Etihad Airways’ long-haul network, while the Lugano base supports operations across regional destinations. Expansion plans emphasize both route growth and the potential integration of services such as codeshares, frequent flyer benefits, and synchronized schedules to facilitate easier transfers.

The move follows Etihad’s broader strategy of forming equity partnerships with select carriers to extend its market presence and improve global connectivity. By acquiring minority stakes in complementary airlines, Etihad seeks to create a cohesive alliance that maintains each partner’s local identity while delivering consistent service quality across networks.

For passengers, the expected outcomes include more travel options within Europe, better connections to international flights, and a consistent level of service influenced by Etihad’s standards. The expansion to 34 destinations would substantially increase regional coverage, opening new travel opportunities and improving access to Etihad’s long-haul services for a wider audience.
