Why Birdwatchers Are Flocking to Vancouver This Season

At the entrance to Stanley Park in Vancouver sits one of North America’s largest colonies of great blue herons, making the area a popular destination for birdwatchers. Birding is a favorite pastime here, and the city often hosts ornithology-focused events that draw enthusiasts from near and far.

From August 19, the International Ornithological Congress will take place in Vancouver, featuring expert speakers and hands-on workshops for professionals and amateurs alike. Running alongside the Congress, the Vancouver International Bird Festival will be held August 19–26. The festival offers a wide range of activities, including guided birding tours, art exhibitions, family-friendly events and even a bird parade. While visiting, be sure to stop by the new Backyard Bird Garden at VanDusen Botanical Garden, where observers have already recorded 85 different species.
