American Airlines Launches New London to Phoenix Nonstop Route

American Airlines will introduce a new route between London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) beginning March 31, 2019. The airline will operate the route using a Boeing 777-200, marking American’s first transatlantic service to and from Phoenix.

Vasu Raja, vice president of network and schedule planning for American Airlines, said the launch further strengthens the carrier’s transatlantic partnership with British Airways and expands options for travelers throughout Europe and North America. “Our extensive networks on each side of the Atlantic are complementary and enable further long-haul expansion from both points of sale,” he commented.

Sean Doyle, director of network for British Airways, welcomed the new service and noted that it complements British Airways’ existing daily flight between London Heathrow and Phoenix. He said the additional link enhances the Atlantic Joint Business between the two carriers and improves the travel experience for customers.

In addition to the Heathrow–Phoenix route, American Airlines is adding a number of seasonal and year-round transatlantic services for the following summer season. Highlights include:

  • From Philadelphia International Airport: Daily summer seasonal service to Edinburgh, Scotland; and new summer seasonal service to Berlin-Tegel, Bologna Guglielmo Marconi and Dubrovnik.
  • From Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport: Daily summer seasonal service to Dublin and Munich.
  • From Chicago O’Hare International Airport: Daily summer seasonal service to Athens.
  • From Charlotte Douglas International Airport: Daily year-round service to Munich (MUC).

These additions are part of American’s broader strategy to expand long-haul connectivity between key U.S. hubs and European destinations, offering more options for leisure and business travelers and strengthening partnerships across the Atlantic.
