Crystal Cruises Launches Luxury Air Service for Travelers

Crystal Cruises has acquired a Boeing Business Jet 777-200LR to expand its luxury air travel division, Crystal Luxury Air. The widebody BBJ 777-200LR will be refitted to carry 88 guests in an elevated cabin configuration featuring full flat-bed first-class seats alongside dedicated lounge and bar areas. Crystal plans to operate a mix of international and around-the-world itineraries, including 14- and 28-day journeys, beginning in 2017.

Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, chairman of Crystal Cruises, described the purchase as part of a long-term strategy to develop Crystal into a global leader in luxury hospitality and lifestyle. “Our mission is to make Crystal the core of what will become the world’s premier luxury hospitality and lifestyle brand collection, not only for the immediate future, but for years to come,” he said. The addition of a second luxury aircraft represents a significant step toward realizing that vision.

The refit of the 777-200LR will emphasize spaciousness and privacy while maintaining a sense of refined social areas. With only 88 seats, the cabin layout is being designed to provide generous personal space and premium amenities. The inclusion of a lounge and bar will give passengers a relaxed environment for socializing and entertaining during longer segments of the itinerary.

By integrating luxury aviation with its established cruise and hospitality offerings, Crystal aims to deliver seamless, high-end travel experiences from the air to the shore. The program’s curated itineraries are intended to appeal to discerning travelers seeking exclusive, itinerary-driven journeys that combine comfort, service, and destination-rich routing.

Crystal’s move into dedicated luxury aircraft operations reflects a broader trend among premium travel brands seeking to control more of the guest experience. Owning and operating aircraft allows these brands to synchronize schedules, tailor onboard services, and extend their signature standards of hospitality beyond hotels and ships to the skies.

For passengers, the 777-200LR configuration promises long-range capability combined with an intimate onboard atmosphere. The aircraft’s extended range enables non-stop or limited-stop routing between distant destinations, making it suitable for ambitious around-the-world circuits and extended international tours that are central to Crystal Luxury Air’s planned program.

Crystal’s statement emphasizes both immediate benefits and a long-range commitment to the luxury travel market. The company is positioning the new aircraft as a complement to its existing fleet and as a component of a broader, integrated collection of luxury travel products that will continue to evolve.
