Home to the Culinary Institute of Canada and the beloved setting of the novel Anne of Green Gables, Prince Edward Island is a charming destination for food lovers. This eastern maritime province offers an abundance of fresh seafood—lobster, mussels and oysters—along with organic beef and a wide variety of produce grown across its fertile, green fields. The island’s culinary scene blends traditional Maritime flavours with creative, modern approaches from talented local chefs.
Each year the island hosts several food and drink festivals that showcase local ingredients and culinary talent. On May 21, the Confederation Centre of the Arts will host the PEI Savour Food & Wine Show, where leading island chefs present tasting portions of signature dishes paired with wines and beers from sixteen vendors. The event is a popular way to sample a broad range of island flavours in one setting and to meet the chefs responsible for them.
In the fall the island’s food calendar grows even busier. From September 2 to October 2 the Fall Flavours Festival runs a month of culinary programming that includes memorable dining experiences such as chowder and lobster meals in unusual locations, tastings of handcrafted PEI beers, and hands-on culinary boot camps. These boot camps let visitors harvest oysters or participate in potato-picking activities, offering a direct connection to the island’s food sources.
The festival attracts well-known chefs who lead demonstrations and special events; recent participants have included personalities from Canada’s culinary scene. From September 15 to 18, the Prince Edward Island International Shellfish Festival features live music, a PEI Potato Chowder Championship, the Garland Canada International Chef Challenge, and the Raspberry Point International Oyster Shucking Championship. Those attending can expect plenty of fresh shellfish and other locally produced foods served in a lively, community-focused atmosphere.
Whether you come for a tasting event, a chef-led class or a seasonal harvest experience, Prince Edward Island offers a diverse culinary itinerary grounded in fresh, local ingredients and warm Maritime hospitality. The island’s festivals and food-focused gatherings provide excellent opportunities to taste, learn and celebrate the flavours that make PEI distinctive.
