Hyatt has launched a global initiative to eliminate single-use plastic straws and drink picks. Effective Sept. 1, these items will be provided only upon request, and many properties will offer eco-friendly alternatives such as paper, compostable or reusable options where available.
This move is part of Hyatt’s broader 2020 Environmental Sustainability Vision, which focuses on minimizing and diverting food waste, sourcing responsibly, and reducing water and energy consumption across its portfolio.
Hyatt has recently advanced several sustainability goals. The company now works exclusively with 100 percent sustainable Avendra suppliers and distributors, has exceeded its target to cut greenhouse gas emissions per square meter by 25 percent compared with 2006 levels across all regions, and has introduced recyclable earbuds at fitness centers in Hyatt hotels throughout North America.
2020 also marks the 10-year anniversary of Hyatt’s partnership with Clean the World, a nonprofit that collects and recycles soap and shampoo products to donate to communities in need. Since the collaboration began, Hyatt has donated more than 475,000 pounds of bar soaps and toiletries.
“At Hyatt, we care for people so they can be their best, and this care extends to our communities and to preserving resources for future generations. Eliminating plastic straws and drink picks builds on the environmental sustainability programs we have in place and further drives our global efforts to reduce environmental impact,” said Frank Lavey, senior vice president, global operations, Hyatt. “This is a meaningful step, and our commitment doesn’t stop with straws and drink picks. We will continue exploring viable alternatives everywhere we can.”
