If you’ve visited South Africa, toured its vineyards and fallen for the wine, there’s a new way to enjoy those flavors: canned South African wine. While some traditionalists may balk, canned wine has arrived from South Africa and is making its way into the U.S. market.
Lubanzi Wines, one of the country’s fastest-growing labels, is the first South African producer to launch canned wines in the United States.
Founded in Cape Town in 2016, Lubanzi operates as a social enterprise committed to building a sustainable and equitable supply chain. A portion of the brand’s profits supports The Pebbles Project, a South African nonprofit that provides health and education services to wine farm workers and their families.
“If any country embodies the spirit that has supported the boom of canned wine, it is South Africa,” the company said in a statement. “The category is fantastic fun, but the quality’s the same. These wines are the same ones that go into our bottles.”
Lubanzi emphasizes that its move into cans aligns with its broader goals: producing forward-thinking, clean and affordable wines while celebrating and promoting Cape Town and the Western Cape. The brand describes the region’s cultural identity as closely aligned with the growing casual, approachable spirit now associated with wine in cans.
“Venturing with bright eyes into the canned wine movement felt like a natural extension of who we are as a business and a brand,” the company added. “It’s a timely and fitting step in South Africa’s ongoing effort to claim its place at the American table for both quality and innovation.”
By combining sustainability, community support and modern packaging, Lubanzi aims to broaden how people experience South African wine—making it more accessible for outdoor events, casual gatherings and consumers seeking convenience without sacrificing the quality found in traditional bottles.
