WestJet and China Southern Airlines have announced a new codeshare agreement covering select flights within Canada. Under this partnership, China Southern Airlines will place its CZ code on a number of WestJet services connecting Vancouver (YVR) with Edmonton (YEG), Kelowna (YLW), Ottawa (YOW), Montréal (YUL), Winnipeg (YWG), Prince George (YXS), Calgary (YYC), Toronto (YYZ) and Regina (YQR).
This codeshare arrangement is designed to improve connectivity and convenience for passengers travelling between China and Canada, as well as for travellers on domestic Canadian sectors that feed into international services. By adding the CZ code to WestJet flights on these routes, China Southern can offer customers a wider choice of schedules and seamless booking options that tie into its broader international network.
Zhao Xiaosong, senior vice president of international affairs and alliances for China Southern Airlines, commented on the agreement, noting that the partnership will enhance the value and customer service the airline delivers: “Our new codeshare agreement with WestJet will enhance the value and customer service China Southern Airlines provides to our passengers while also contributing to our growth strategy. For example, our Vancouver flights increased to daily service beginning June 18. Ultimately, this partnership will allow us to provide more products and choices to all our passengers, and enhance our influence in the Sino–Canada market.”
The codeshare is expected to benefit both leisure and business travellers by simplifying transfers and enabling coordinated schedules between the two carriers. Passengers booked on China Southern’s CZ-coded seats for these WestJet-operated flights should expect to access the same onboard experience and service delivered by WestJet, while benefiting from through-ticketing and, where applicable, coordinated baggage handling and connection protection offered through the airlines’ commercial arrangements.
For WestJet, the agreement broadens its relationships within the international airline community. Since 2011, WestJet has established codeshare partnerships with several global carriers, including American Airlines, Air France, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Eastern Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Japan Airlines, KLM and Korean Air. This continued expansion of commercial partnerships supports WestJet’s aim to improve international connectivity for Canadian travellers and to create more seamless travel experiences across multiple carriers.
Operationally, codeshare agreements like this tend to involve coordination of schedules, inventory management, and customer service protocols to ensure a consistent experience across both airlines. Passengers should review their booking confirmation for the operating carrier’s flight number and policies before travel, as the aircraft, inflight services and loyalty accrual rules may follow the operating carrier’s terms even when the ticket bears the marketing carrier’s code.
Travel advisors and customers can book itineraries that combine China Southern’s CZ marketing code with WestJet-operated flights on the specified Canadian routes. Doing so can open up additional routing options when planning travel between Canada and China or when connecting domestically to international departures. As with any codeshare, travellers should verify check-in procedures, baggage allowances and any applicable visa or entry requirements for their journeys.
This agreement reflects ongoing collaboration between North American and Asian carriers to streamline travel between the two regions and to respond to passenger demand for more frequent and flexible connections. By aligning schedules and sharing inventory on key Canadian city pairs, China Southern and WestJet aim to make cross-border travel easier and better integrated for their customers.
