Virgin Atlantic’s Bold Strategy: New Routes, Fleet, and Perks

Virgin Atlantic Airways has unveiled its long-awaited Airbus A330neo, an aircraft crafted to deliver a premium, personalized experience across all cabins. The airline’s Upper Class introduces a redesigned seat, an evolved social space and the Retreat Suite — the largest suite in Virgin Atlantic’s history.

Passengers in Premium and Upper Class benefit from in-seat wireless charging, while travelers in every cabin enjoy more USB ports, Bluetooth-enabled entertainment systems and fast onboard WiFi.

The airline put its first A330neo into service on a customer flight from Boston in late 2022, with further A330neo deliveries scheduled through 2026.

The A330neo’s Retreat Suite transforms Upper Class socializing with two exclusive suites positioned at the front of the cabin. Each suite includes an ottoman that converts to an additional seat, enabling up to four people to dine, converse or play games together in a private space. The forward-facing suite increases storage and personal space and features a fully closing privacy door with a “do not disturb” function. Additional amenities include passenger-controlled mood lighting, a 17.3-inch touchscreen TV and an integrated mirror.

In late 2022 and early 2023, Virgin Atlantic announced its plan to join SkyTeam as the alliance’s newest member. As SkyTeam’s first U.K. member, Virgin Atlantic strengthens the alliance’s transatlantic connections and enhances services to and from London Heathrow and Manchester Airport.

Membership brings passengers a more consistent, seamless travel experience across more than 1,000 global destinations. Customers will gain expanded opportunities to earn and redeem points with partner airlines and access to a network of over 750 airport lounges spanning six continents.

Existing Virgin Atlantic Silver Card holders will be recognized as SkyTeam Elite Members, while Gold Card holders will be elevated to Elite Plus. These statuses bring benefits such as priority check-in, priority baggage handling and priority boarding.

Joining SkyTeam builds on the airline’s successful transatlantic joint venture with Delta Air Lines and Air France-KLM, both established SkyTeam members. At London Heathrow, the four partners operate from Terminal 3 alongside other SkyTeam carriers, offering smoother airside transits and convenient connections for customers.

Virgin Atlantic has also updated its gender identity policy, allowing crew, pilots and ground staff to choose the Vivienne Westwood uniform option that best represents them, regardless of gender, gender identity or gender expression.

This more fluid uniform approach reflects the diversity of the workforce and reinforces Virgin Atlantic’s commitment to inclusivity. LGBTQIA+ colleagues may select either the red or the burgundy uniform depending on which best represents them.

The policy is part of an ongoing effort to celebrate individuality among employees and customers. The airline has also introduced optional pronoun badges for staff and travelers. Customers can request a pronoun badge at check-in or in the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse lounge to ensure they are addressed correctly.

Launched under the Be Yourself agenda, these measures complement previous inclusivity initiatives. Since 2019, cabin crew have been given the choice to wear makeup or not and to wear trousers and flat shoes. More recent changes include relaxed rules on visible tattoos for cabin and frontline staff, all aimed at creating a more comfortable and authentic workplace.
