Vilnius 700th Anniversary: Events, History & Celebration Guide

On Jan. 25, 2022, Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, began the official countdown to its 700th anniversary year in 2023. Recognized by UNESCO as one of the 67 “most noteworthy anniversaries” of 2022–2023, the milestone has prompted extensive preparations that will include cultural, educational, artistic, and musical programs throughout the anniversary year.

To mark the start of the countdown, a specially designed 21-foot clock was illuminated in the city’s central Cathedral Square. Launched by Remigijus Šimašius, Mayor of Vilnius, the unveiling featured hot-air balloons, musical performances, and displays from the Vilnius Light Festival. The clock will display the number of days remaining until the major anniversary in 2023, serving as a visible reminder for both residents and visitors.

The documented history of Vilnius dates back to Jan. 25, 1323, when Gediminas, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, mentioned the city in letters to foreign merchants and craftsmen. The 700th anniversary offers a moment to celebrate Vilnius’s long and varied history, reinforce connections with local communities and guests, and raise international awareness of the capital’s cultural significance.

Planned events for the 2023 anniversary include performance festivals, a digitally enhanced reconstruction of the first opera staged in Vilnius in the 17th century, and major exhibitions and projects led by the National Museum of Lithuania and the Modern Art Museum. The latter, designed by U.S.-based Studio Libeskind, is among the high-profile cultural initiatives slated to contribute to a yearlong program of celebrations.
