Vancouver Airport Authority announced today an upgrade to its BorderXpress kiosks, introducing the latest biometric technology to streamline international arrivals.
The upgraded kiosks now allow international travelers who have been approved through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) to use BorderXpress. Previously limited to U.S. and Canadian passport holders, the system has been expanded to accept eligible visitors from 38 visa-waiver countries, including Australia, Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom.
Passport holders from these participating countries who have valid ESTA approval can now complete immigration processing more quickly using the automated kiosks. The enhanced biometric capabilities improve identity verification and reduce processing time at primary inspection points, helping to minimize lines and speed passenger flow through the airport.
“Our goal is, and has always been, to lead the transformation of the travel experience,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority. “By expanding our automated passport control capabilities to include travelers from visa-waiver countries, we are continuing to help airports modernize for improved efficiency and customer satisfaction.”
The upgrade reflects a broader trend in aviation toward biometric-enabled self-service, which balances security requirements with the convenience travelers expect. Automated passport control systems like BorderXpress combine secure facial recognition with document-scanning technology to verify identity quickly while maintaining high standards for border security.
Travelers using the enhanced kiosks will follow a simple process: scan their passport, complete any required customs declarations, and have their photo taken for biometric verification. Once the kiosk confirms identity and admissibility, passengers are issued a receipt to present to a CBSA officer for final review, if necessary.
Expanding eligibility to ESTA-approved travelers simplifies arrival procedures for many international visitors and supports faster connections for those transferring to domestic or onward flights. The move is also expected to reduce pressure on staffed inspection counters, allowing airport resources to be allocated more efficiently during peak periods.
The Vancouver Airport Authority continues to explore technology-driven improvements aimed at enhancing passenger experience while maintaining robust security controls. This BorderXpress upgrade is one of several initiatives designed to accelerate processing times and improve the predictability of arrival experiences for international travelers.
Travelers planning to use BorderXpress should ensure they meet ESTA requirements and carry the passport used for their ESTA application. As with all automated systems, officials may still select travelers for additional screening, and having supporting documentation readily available will help resolve any inquiries quickly.
