United Airlines now provides nonstop service between San Francisco (SFO) and Auckland (AKL). This inaugural route also marks the start of United’s joint-venture partnership with Air New Zealand, designed to improve connectivity and offer more travel options across the trans-Pacific corridor.
“Our new joint venture with Air New Zealand allows both airlines to optimize our trans-Pacific schedules and offer customers more choice and convenience when traveling between the United States and New Zealand. Our customers want new ways to access New Zealand and destinations beyond and our relationship with Air New Zealand allows customers to plan seamless travel throughout the South Pacific,” said Jim Compton, vice chairman and chief revenue officer at United Airlines.
“We know that New Zealand is a popular destination for American travelers. By working more closely with such a strong carrier like United Airlines, we look forward to welcoming even more American visitors to enjoy our unique Kiwi tourism experience,” said Cam Wallace, chief sales and commercial officer at Air New Zealand.
The inaugural flight highlighted environmental and operational efficiencies. United partnered with regional initiatives to reduce emissions, using a Boeing 787-8 for the service. The 787-8 features lightweight composite construction and advanced aerodynamics to improve range and fuel efficiency. Operational measures for the demonstration flight included optimized routing and expedited ground handling to reduce fuel burn and emissions.
United’s service operates three times weekly. Departures from San Francisco leave at 10:45 p.m., arriving in Auckland at 6:55 a.m. two days later. Return flights depart Auckland at 1:20 p.m. and arrive in San Francisco at 6:40 a.m. on the same calendar day. Typical flight times are around 13 hours.
As part of the partnership, Air New Zealand also serves the route with daily flights. Their schedule from San Francisco departs at 9:45 p.m., arriving in Auckland at 5:35 a.m. two days later. Return service from Auckland departs at 7:45 p.m., arriving in San Francisco at 12:45 p.m. the same day.
This joint-venture alignment allows both carriers to coordinate schedules, expand fare options, and streamline connections across the South Pacific, making travel between the United States and New Zealand more convenient for passengers and better integrated with onward connections throughout the region.
