UNESCO-Listed Houses in Stuttgart: What to See and Visit

Last month, the two Le Corbusier houses at the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart, Germany, were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. This recognition is Stuttgart’s first UNESCO designation and the 41st for Germany overall. The inscription is part of a transnational nomination that included destinations in seven other countries to recognize 17 of Le Corbusier’s buildings, celebrating the architect’s outstanding contribution to Modernism.

The two houses in Stuttgart are Le Corbusier’s only buildings in Germany and are complemented by the Weissenhof Museum on the estate. Their inclusion highlights Le Corbusier’s visionary approach and the significant shift in architectural thinking that occurred around the World War II era. The Weissenhof Estate remains an important example of early modern housing design and urban planning.

Germany’s other UNESCO World Heritage sites include landmarks such as Cologne Cathedral, the Wadden Sea, the Classical Weimar cultural ensemble, and the Old Town of Regensburg. These sites reflect the country’s diverse cultural, natural, and historical heritage across regions and eras.
