Uber Unveils Major App Redesign: What’s New and How It Works

After a recent redesign of the Uber app, two new traveler-focused features were introduced: integration with Snapchat and the ability to choose people to meet — not just places.

These additions are intended to make the Uber experience more engaging and useful beyond simply getting from point A to B. Riders can now access exclusive Uber-themed filters in Snapchat, giving users a playful way to share trips and moments from their ride.

“We designed the new Uber app around you — and our core beliefs that time is a luxury and that the information you need should always be at your fingertips. Gone are the days when everyone’s app looks the same,” said Yuhki Yamashita, senior product manager at Uber. “The new Uber experience is reimagined around a simple question — ‘Where to?’ After all, you use Uber to get somewhere — or to someone. And by starting with your destination, we can tailor the journey to you.”

One of the notable updates is the option to select a person as your destination. Instead of searching for an address or figuring out where someone is located, you can pick that individual in the app and Uber will route you to them. This streamlines meetups and removes the friction of coordinating precise locations.

Another practical feature lets Uber share your estimated time of arrival (ETA) with friends, so they know roughly when you’ll arrive. Both the rider and the recipient must have the app for ETA sharing to function, ensuring privacy and consent while enhancing coordination.

While many users welcome the added convenience and personalization these features offer, the redesign has also raised concerns about background location tracking. Some riders have criticized the app for continuing to collect location data even when it’s not actively in use. Uber emphasizes that personalization and smoother experiences are the goals behind these changes, but the debate over privacy and data permissions continues.

Overall, the redesign positions Uber to better support social meetups and in-ride sharing through Snapchat integration and person-based navigation. The update aims to make travel feel more connected and efficient while giving users tools to communicate arrival times and capture moments during their trips. As adoption grows, balancing useful functionality with clear privacy controls will remain important for user trust and satisfaction.
