Uber Launches In-App Public Transit Option for Riders

Ride-hailing company Uber has introduced a new transit feature that displays public transportation options and fares alongside its own ride prices. The feature is launching first in Denver, with plans for expansion to additional cities.

Uber says many public transit alternatives are often faster and less expensive, and integrating them into the app aims to provide users with a more complete set of choices for getting around.

“People already use different ways to choose how to get from A to B,” Fred Jones, head of new mobility for the UK and Ireland at Uber, told Business Traveller at the Business Travel Show in London. “We’re helping people make that choice from one place inside our app.”

For the Denver rollout, Uber is working with the city’s Regional Transportation District to supply real-time transit options, step-by-step directions and estimated journey times. This integration gives riders up-to-date schedules and routing information alongside Uber ride estimates.

The company expects to extend the feature to other major cities, with London and Paris among likely next destinations. Over time, Uber plans to expand functionality to include multistage trip planning, allowing users to combine public transportation and Uber rides in a single journey. This will help travelers compare cost and travel time across mixed-mode options and choose the solution that best fits their needs.

By presenting multiple modes of transport in one place—covering buses, trains, trams and Uber services—the app aims to reduce friction in trip planning, encourage more efficient travel choices and make the platform more useful for daily commuters as well as occasional riders.

Integrating transit data into the ride-hailing experience can benefit cities and riders alike: transit agencies gain broader visibility, and riders can more easily identify faster or cheaper routes. Uber’s partnerships with local transit authorities, beginning with Denver’s Regional Transportation District, are a key element of delivering accurate, real-time information to users within the app.

Although public transit may be the best option in many cases, Uber’s goal is to position its app as a single destination for selecting among all available mobility choices. That unified approach helps people weigh convenience, price and travel time without switching between multiple apps or websites.

As the feature rolls out to more locations and evolves to support combined journeys, commuters should see clearer comparisons between transit and ride-hailing options, more reliable timing information, and an easier way to plan trips that mix different modes of transportation.
