The opening of Tulum Airport a year ago renewed interest in the southern Riviera Maya, cutting travel time from Cancún International Airport from about an hour and a half to roughly 40 minutes. Located about 15 minutes from the Mayan ruins and the town, Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya opened in January 2022 and fully embraces its natural surroundings.
Paths from guest rooms to the main building often follow dirt or stone walkways lined with palms and tropical plants, and it’s common to spot iguanas and native coatis along the way. Guests in the resort’s Ceiba Club, an elevated enclave, can enjoy breakfast, lunch or a pre-dinner drink in a private restaurant that looks out onto lush foliage. The bar serves a notable passionfruit martini and a refreshing gin and tonic made with Ginebra Armónico, a citrusy, floral, and spicy Mexican gin distilled in a London Dry style with a complex botanical profile. Both cocktails pair well with leche de tigre ceviche, yuca tostadas, or guacamole with pico de gallo and cotija cheese.

The resort’s five pools were designed around the existing landscape to preserve the natural terrain rather than reshape it. Standout spots include the alfresco Ultramar, where an open-air bar and adjacent lounge create a vibrant poolside atmosphere. Guests can relax on teak seats or stretch out on round daybeds piled with pillows while enjoying a sparkling daiquiri made with rum, yuzu, pineapple and rice syrup, finished with green tea–infused Prosecco, or an ice-cold local Tulum Lager. Lunch here often features ultra-fresh preparations such as thinly sliced raw tuna topped with cucumber, cilantro, pepitas and miso-ponzu.
The property’s palette is deliberately muted, letting tropical woods and verdant foliage set the tone. Floor-to-ceiling wooden doors open into an expansive lobby that signals a refined, tranquil atmosphere. Adjacent to the lobby, Chaak Bar provides a sleek setting for a nightcap, with options like local sparkling wine or a carajillo, the Latin American take on an espresso-based cocktail.

Among the resort’s fine-dining options, Autor stands out. Its six-course, fixed-price tasting menu (with a vegetarian option) offers a thoughtful exploration of Mexican flavors and techniques. Sit at the chef’s counter to watch preparations unfold — from charred shrimp tossed in adobo chili mayonnaise to a pumpkin dessert layered with purée, pepita crumble and rice pudding–infused ice cream.
The wine list complements the cuisine with selections from both Mexico and the international market. Three palapa-shaded chiringuitos—evoking Caribbean beachfront snack bars—each focus on different casual menus featuring seafood, grilled dishes or meats. Daily catch tacos, garnished with tomato, radish and microgreens, pair nicely with a crisp white from San Luis Potosí or another well-chosen bottle.
The beach here is peacefully sheltered in a small cove, and a short walk leads to two additional tiny, secluded beaches shaded by trees with exposed, sculptural roots. It’s an ideal spot to unwind with a paloma and feel removed from the bustle. Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya offers a deeply immersive experience that reflects its place: natural, relaxed and thoughtfully composed. Savor the moment.
