Tulip Care 101: How to Revive and Bloom Dormant Bulbs

Be among the first to experience Riff Chelsea, a musically inspired walk-up hotel and the latest incarnation of the former Chelsea Star, a property long rumored to have inspired Madonna’s hit “Lucky Star.”

Riff Chelsea captures the glitter, glamour and attitude of the 1980s — from punk-funk and no-wave to the vibrant collision of fashion, music and art. Embracing the anything-can-happen spirit of that era, a former flower shop on the hotel’s ground floor has been transformed into a rotating gallery curated by Chashama, the New York artists’ collective known for activating unused spaces as creative venues for emerging local artists.

Designed to feel like a continuous creative happening, Riff Chelsea draws direct inspiration from the city’s electric downtown scene of the ’80s. The hotel’s creators cite legendary Chelsea institutions such as Danceteria, the near-mythic club where underground figures across disciplines — from visual artists to musicians and performance artists — converged to shape New York’s cultural landscape.

The property offers 44 retro-contemporary rooms that suit a variety of travelers: budget-friendly singles with shared bathrooms, comfortable guestrooms with seating areas and private en-suite bathrooms, and other thoughtfully designed accommodations that balance vintage influence with modern comfort. In an adjacent building, six spacious “rock star” apartments ranging from 500 to 1,000 square feet provide an elevated stay, and all guest areas are unified by the hotel’s central design element — a 600-square-foot outdoor courtyard that connects the buildings and serves as a communal creative space.

With its blend of nostalgia and contemporary edge, Riff Chelsea offers more than a place to sleep — it aims to recreate the social energy of an era when art, music and nightlife collided, inviting guests to live within that atmosphere during their stay.
