Arrival/Check-in: After waiting for a taxi at JFK in 17-degree weather for 45 minutes, stepping into the warm, welcoming lobby at The Mark was a relief. The modern space features bold black-and-white marble flooring and comfortable seating areas. The concierge greeted me promptly and check-in was efficient. I was escorted to my room, my suitcase was delivered, and staff wished me a pleasant stay. (29/30)
Guest Quarters: I stayed in a Seventy-Seven one-bedroom suite, which looked out over the snow-dusted stoops of 77th Street. The suite was spacious and comfortably heated, with a king-sized bed dressed in soft Quagliotti linens, an overstuffed armchair with chaise and ample closet space. The neutral palette felt calming and refined, accented by striking black details. A Bang & Olufsen 32-inch LCD television delivered a crisp picture and supported iPod, MP3 and laptop connectivity. While there was no formal desk, a corner table served well for my laptop, phone and paperwork. Complimentary Internet was included. The bathroom was a highlight: modern and elegant with black-and-white marble floors and subtle mint-green accents. It featured large dual sinks, a deep soaking tub and a walk-in shower with excellent water pressure. Multiple lighting options and heated floors added comfort, and a mirrored TV allowed me to catch the morning news while getting ready. The suite also included a distinctive bar area with Sub-Zero freezer drawers and a carefully chosen selection of drinks and snacks. (30/30)
Services/Amenities: The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges is located just off the lobby and offers distinct menus for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. I enjoyed afternoon tea—green tea paired with a Sweet Tea dessert plate of freshly baked scones, éclairs and small cakes. The Mark Bar is a stylish spot for signature cocktails frequented by both locals and guests. On the second floor, the Frederic Fekkai Salon provides a full range of beauty services. I did not use the fitness center, but the 24/7, state-of-the-art gym is attractive, with a wall of large windows overlooking Madison Avenue; personal trainers are available on request. (40/40)
The Experience: With 118 rooms, The Mark delivers a distinctive, sophisticated experience—bold yet refined. Located on the Upper East Side, the hotel sits one block from Central Park and within walking distance of cultural landmarks such as the Guggenheim Museum and Carnegie Hall, along with many shopping and dining options. While major corporate offices aren’t clustered immediately nearby, they are easily reachable by a short taxi ride.
