Arrival/Check-in: I arrived at Campton Place on a rainy Wednesday and was met by a warm, attentive doorman who took my luggage from the cab and, after a quick look at the tag, remembered my name throughout my stay. Although I arrived an hour before the official check-in time, the front desk staff assured me my room would be ready. Check-in was efficient and friendly; the concierge pointed out the restaurant and bar across the lobby and escorted me to my room while my bags arrived a few minutes later. (30/30)
Guest Quarters: My deluxe room overlooked Union Square. While the roof of the floor below obscured part of the view, the illuminated tree and street lights more than compensated. The room’s palette of warm beiges, creams, and browns gave it a contemporary, comfortable feel, complemented by cherry wood and frosted-glass closet and bathroom doors. The bathroom featured a large sink with Molton Brown amenities arranged on a marble counter, and an elegant deep bathtub-and-shower combination with strong water pressure. The only drawback was that noises from neighboring room showers carried through, so I had to raise the flat-screen TV volume at times. The king bed was dressed in soft Frette linens and rested on a mattress with a pleasing balance of firmness and softness. A wide, leather-topped desk and in-room internet made it easy to work; while in-room access carries a daily fee, the hotel provides free connections in the lobby and business center. A chaise longue on the windowsill offered a pleasant spot to watch the lively street below. (25/30)
Services/Amenities: During my stay I tried the restaurant, the bar, and room service. The dim, lively bar had an extensive wine list; I enjoyed a crisp, sweet Riesling that complemented the evening. The Campton Place Restaurant is one of San Francisco’s notable dining spots, serving breakfast, lunch, tea, and dinner—my breakfast of eggs Benedict with salmon was well prepared. Although I didn’t use the fitness center, I visited it briefly and liked the modern equipment and the view over Union Square. Service throughout was professional and attentive. (39/40)
The Experience: Campton Place is ideally located for both business and leisure travelers—just steps from the attractions of Union Square and within walking distance of many financial district offices. A wide variety of restaurants and shops surround the hotel, and the concierge and doormen are well versed in local recommendations, from dining to neighborhood highlights. Attentive staff, refined rooms, and convenient amenities combine to make Campton Place an elegant and convenient base for exploring the city.
