Survey: Travelers Reject Biometric IDs at Airports

Major airlines are starting to introduce fingerprint scanning as an alternative to traditional paper or mobile boarding passes. At the same time, biometric identification is gaining traction across industries that intersect with travel, promising greater convenience and streamlined security procedures.

However, many travelers are pushing back, concerned about privacy and how their biometric data will be used and stored. A recent survey by Boxever highlights that distrust is a major reason passengers hesitate to share sensitive personal information such as fingerprints.

Key findings from the Boxever survey include:

  • 66 percent of business travelers surveyed do not want brands tracking their location;
  • 61 percent of business travelers surveyed would like to receive offers relevant to their current location and activities;
  • 56 percent of business travelers surveyed prefer not to share personal information;
  • 56 percent of business travelers surveyed want offers tailored to their individual interests and needs.

These results show a nuanced view: while many travelers value personalized offers and convenience, a nearly equal share are wary of data collection and tracking. For airlines and travel companies, the challenge is to balance personalization with strong privacy protections—building trust through transparency, clear consent mechanisms, and robust data security.

For passengers, the choice to adopt biometrics often depends on assurances about how data is handled: whether biometric templates are stored locally or centrally, how long data is retained, and what safeguards prevent unauthorized access or secondary uses. Clear policies and visible privacy controls can help reduce resistance and increase adoption.

As biometric boarding and identity systems expand, industry stakeholders should prioritize user education and consent-first approaches. When travelers understand the benefits and the protections in place, they are more likely to embrace new technologies that simplify the travel experience without compromising their privacy.
