Super Bowl 2016 Drives Record Hotel Prices in San Francisco

Hotels throughout San Francisco are sharply raising their rates to profit from Super Bowl 2016, according to a recent survey by CheapHotels.org. Although Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara—where Super Bowl 50 took place on Feb. 7, 2016—is about 40 miles southeast of the city, limited room availability near the stadium has driven many visitors to seek accommodations in San Francisco, and nearly 60 percent of local hotels reported being sold out.

Among the San Francisco properties that still had availability, average rates rose by approximately 124 percent during the Super Bowl period, the survey found. Some hotels raised prices far more steeply. For example, the Monarch Hotel, a budget property in the city’s theater district, listed standard rooms at $649 per night for the Super Bowl timeframe—an increase of roughly 335 percent over its usual rate.

One of the largest increases was at Andrews Hotel, a 3-star property located two blocks from Union Square. During the Super Bowl, the hotel was charging about $889 per night for a standard double room, nearly 400 percent higher than its regular rate.
