Sunny Isles Beach, the coastal community between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, has reopened the Newport Fishing Pier, the only public fishing pier in Miami-Dade County.
Originally constructed in 1936 and designated a historic site in 1982, the pier was heavily damaged by Hurricane Wilma in October 2005. After an extensive restoration, the pier is now open again to anglers and visitors, offering the popular recreational fishing opportunities for species such as Spanish mackerel, snapper, barracuda, kingfish and bluefish.
The renovation, completed at a cost of $6.5 million, extends the pier to a total length of 776 feet, with 610 feet stretching over the water and nearly 12,000 square feet of usable space. Upgrades include a lifeguard observation area and a public fishing concession to support anglers. A restaurant is planned to open later this year, enhancing the pier’s amenities and visitor experience.
The restored Newport Fishing Pier enhances Sunny Isles Beach’s public coastal access and recreational offerings while preserving a piece of local history. With improved facilities and expanded space, the pier aims to serve residents and tourists alike for fishing, sightseeing and leisure along the Atlantic shoreline.
