Author Stephen King made Colorado’s historic Stanley Hotel famous in both horror literature and hospitality with his novel The Shining. This Halloween season, the iconic Rocky Mountain property is hosting three themed events. On Oct. 21, the RedRum Mystery Dinner takes place in the MacGregor Ballroom, featuring a four-course gourmet meal, a complimentary glass of wine and live entertainment. On Oct. 22, The Shining Ball fills the Concert Hall with music from the North Mississippi Allstars — costumes are required. During the ball’s costume contest guests will enjoy gourmet hors d’oeuvres and two complimentary drinks. On Oct. 29, the hotel holds its annual Halloween Masquerade Party starting at 9 p.m., with live music, drinks and small bites; costumes are once again encouraged.
Wondering what to pack for a stay at the Stanley Hotel besides your most spine-chilling costume? Bring reading material that sets the mood. A strong pick for a spooky night is Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy by Thommy Hutson, which includes a foreword by filmmaker Wes Craven. Hutson’s illustrated history of the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise offers insider anecdotes, hundreds of photos and interviews with cast and crew. The book also traces the rise of New Line Cinema, the studio that launched the series, and reflects Hutson’s standing as a well-regarded authority on the films.
Whether you’re attending an on-site event or simply staying to soak up the hotel’s eerie atmosphere, this combination of themed celebration and immersive reading makes for a memorable Halloween getaway. If you prefer to sleep with the lights on after a night of scares, that’s perfectly understandable — and entirely acceptable at the Stanley.
