Starwood’s SPG Keyless system launched in 2014 as one of the hospitality industry’s earliest mobile key solutions, enabling guests to unlock their rooms with a smartphone. Last week, Starwood announced an expansion of the program and the rollout of the next generation of its keyless technology. Select Le Méridien, Westin, Sheraton and Four Points hotels around the world now offer SPG Keyless, with additional properties scheduled to come online later this year.
Previously, the technology was available at about 160 properties within the Aloft, Element and W brands. The upgraded SPG Keyless now also supports multiple guests from the same room using keyless entry, provided each guest has an SPG account and access to the mobile app. App updates to improve functionality and user experience are planned over the coming months.
“Innovation and personalization are at the center of everything we do, and we’re committed to making travel better for every SPG member by creating solutions for digital lifestyles,” said Alyssa Waxenberg, vice president of mobile at Starwood Hotels & Resorts. “SPG Keyless is literally opening doors for SPG members. It is also transformative for Starwood’s hotel associates, allowing them to better engage with guests. Rather than the first interaction being the swipe of a credit card, hotel associates can now focus on ways to better personalize guests’ stays.”
More than 350,000 SPG members are registered for SPG Keyless, with SPG Platinum members representing the largest group of users. The feature has proven especially popular in urban destinations; the top cities for SPG Keyless usage are New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas and Miami.
This evolution of SPG Keyless aligns with broader trends in hospitality toward contactless, mobile-first services that streamline arrival and in-stay experiences. By expanding compatibility across major brands and enabling multiple authorized users per reservation, Starwood aims to make mobile check-in and room access more practical and convenient for a wider range of guests.
