Starwood Hotels & Resorts has partnered with NRG Energy, Inc. to bring clean, sustainable power to The Phoenician, a Luxury Collection Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. The collaboration installed a 568-kilowatt solar array composed of roughly 2,000 photovoltaic panels. This system is expected to offset a portion of the resort’s energy use—about the same amount of electricity consumed by 90 average homes.
The solar installation was designed to preserve The Phoenician’s iconic views of Camelback Mountain while reducing the resort’s carbon footprint and supporting Starwood’s broader sustainability goals. Beyond energy savings and emissions reductions, the panels also provide shaded areas that can be used for outdoor events and guest amenities.
“At Starwood, sustainability is second nature, and our work with NRG Renew at The Phoenician exemplifies our commitment to that idea while also going the extra step to create a better world to experience,” said Ken Siegel, chief administrative officer and general counsel of Starwood and head of Global Citizenship.
This project is the first in a series of planned collaborations between NRG and Starwood. The hotel company has set targets to cut energy consumption and carbon emissions by 30 percent and to reduce water use by 20 percent by 2020. Additional solar installations are planned for The Westin St. John Resort in the U.S. Virgin Islands and The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka’anapali, as part of that effort.
