Starbucks has opened a new destination store in Southeast Asia: the Starbucks Dewata Coffee Sanctuary. Occupying 20,000 square feet, the space celebrates Indonesian craftsmanship and culture while highlighting the local coffee heritage. Guests can experience an Arabica coffee farm up close, participate in hands-on activities such as de-pulping and washing coffee cherries, observe seedlings in the nursery, and browse a curated selection of Balinese crafts and Indonesian art. The location also features more than 100 exclusive handcrafted beverages and food items, created specifically for this destination.
Kevin Johnson, CEO of Starbucks Coffee Company, emphasized the company’s long connection to Indonesia’s coffee industry: “We began sourcing Indonesian coffees more than four decades ago and have always been struck by the sense of community and care for the coffee journey at every step. The Starbucks Dewata Coffee Sanctuary amplifies our passion for the coffee journey, our ongoing commitment to Indonesia’s rich coffee culture, and our tireless pursuit of fostering moments of connection between our partners and customers. The Coffee Sanctuary marks the tenth Starbucks Reserve Bar store in Indonesia, one of 185 stores around the world, with the majority in Asia. This is Starbucks at its best, and we are proud to open the doors of this unique experience in one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic markets.”
Anthony Cottan, director of Starbucks Indonesia, PT Sari Coffee Indonesia Limited, highlighted Bali’s appeal and the region’s coffee significance: “Bali has an envied reputation as one of Asia’s top travel destinations and Indonesia is one of coffee’s most extraordinary origin regions, so we’re excited to invite customers here to ignite their senses and explore the seed-to-cup coffee journey at this unique Coffee Sanctuary. We’re very pleased to further strengthen the longstanding partnership between Starbucks and PT Sari Coffee Indonesia with this truly one-of-a-kind Starbucks store, inspired by and filled with the finest examples of Indonesian art, design and craftsmanship.”
The Dewata Coffee Sanctuary is designed to be immersive and educational, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the full coffee lifecycle. From nursery to cup, the space showcases sustainable practices and the craftsmanship behind specialty coffee production. Interactive demonstrations allow guests to witness stages of processing and learn about the flavors that develop at each step, while the retail area highlights locally made products and artisanal goods that support regional makers and communities.
Beyond the hands-on farming elements and curated retail, the Sanctuary provides a platform for storytelling about Indonesian coffee growers and their communities. The concept aims to connect visitors with the personal and cultural narratives that shape the coffee’s origin, offering context that enriches tasting experiences. With trained baristas and coffee experts on site, guests can sample rare Indonesian varieties and discover how origin, processing, and roasting contribute to distinct flavor profiles.
By combining cultural displays, educational programming, and a menu of exclusive beverages and food, the Starbucks Dewata Coffee Sanctuary positions itself as both a destination for travelers and a resource for coffee enthusiasts. The store’s design and programming reflect a commitment to honoring local traditions while presenting specialty coffee in ways that are approachable and engaging for a broad audience.
The opening underscores Starbucks’ ongoing investment in markets where coffee heritage is deeply rooted, and its effort to create meaningful experiences that celebrate origin, craftsmanship, and community. For visitors to Bali and coffee lovers in the region, the Dewata Coffee Sanctuary offers a comprehensive, sensory-rich look into Indonesia’s vibrant coffee culture.
