Spend Christmas at a French Château: Stocking Traditions & Stay Tips

Plan a special celebration this holiday season with a stay at a historic French château in the Loire Valley. If pipers and dancers are part of your ideal holiday, set your compass for Château de Chambord, where 100 twinkling Christmas trees create a festive setting for Renaissance music, dance, storytelling, performances, workshops and themed activities. Guests can sip mulled wine and sample sweet treats or browse the shops for artisanal products made from the estate’s own natural resources.

This season, some of the Renaissance era’s most influential women will be honored at Château Royal de Blois. Elegant decorations of lace and glitter set the tone, and the château offers an evening mystery tour called Nocturnal Murmurs. After the grounds close to the public, the nocturnal tour unfolds with a dramatic light-and-sound performance projected onto the château’s façade.

Rooms and gardens at Château de Cheverny will be lavishly decorated for the holidays, with a walkway of giant confections to delight visitors. In front of the Orangerie, colossal teacups evoke the property’s beloved hot chocolate. Don’t miss the permanent on-site exhibition dedicated to the adventures of Tintin and his dog Snowy, created by Belgian cartoonist Hergé in collaboration with the Hergé Foundation.

Add even more charm to your holiday at Château de Villandry, where seasonal magic appears both inside and out. The gardens are adorned with plant decorations that include majestic reindeer, gentle fawns, watchful owls and playful squirrels. An enchanted forest of plants is also displayed in the attic, offering a whimsical experience for visitors of all ages.

Built over the river between 1513 and 1517, the magnificent Château de Chenonceau celebrates the season with floral table arrangements designed by Jean-François Boucher, honored as Meilleur Ouvrier de France, a title reserved for France’s most accomplished master craftspeople.
