Southwest Airlines Begins Flights to Hawaii in 2018

Americans seeking sun and surf during the dreary winter months will soon have another option for direct flights to Hawai’i. Beginning in 2018 and 2019, Southwest Airlines will operate nonstop service from the mainland United States to Hawai’i.

This new service adds to the existing national and international carriers serving the route, increasing competition and potentially lowering fares for travelers. Historically focused on short-haul routes, Southwest is expanding into longer flights to compete on this popular corridor between the mainland and the nation’s only island state. The Hawai’i route will also mark a first for the carrier: it will be the only regular service the airline operates that crosses a large expanse of open ocean.

Initially, scheduled departures will originate from airports in California, with potential plans to extend service eastward over time as demand and fleet capabilities allow.

The introduction of the west coast–Hawai’i flights coincides with Southwest’s rollout of its new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, which enables the carrier to serve longer-distance routes while maintaining its low-cost, point-to-point model.

Southwest’s move into transoceanic mainland-to-island service reflects broader market dynamics: growing demand for leisure travel, intense competition on popular routes, and airline fleet modernization. Travelers planning winter getaways can expect more options and, possibly, better prices as carriers adjust capacity and schedules to meet seasonal demand.

As the service launches, passengers should watch for route announcements, schedules, and any introductory fares. The new nonstop flights from California to Hawai’i aim to provide convenient, competitively priced choices for those heading to the islands.
