Southwest Airlines is expanding its schedule this spring, adding frequency and launching more than a dozen new routes across North America. The carrier’s network growth includes a mix of domestic nonstop services and seasonal international connections designed to offer passengers more direct travel options and greater flexibility.
In recent weeks Southwest introduced 11 new routes, with a notable focus on the San Jose, California (SJC) market. From San Jose the airline now offers six nonstop destinations: Boise, Idaho (BOI); Spokane, Washington (GEG); St. Louis, Missouri; New Orleans, Louisiana (MSY); and Albuquerque, New Mexico (ABQ). These additions increase nonstop connectivity for travelers in the Bay Area and expand Southwest’s presence in secondary and leisure markets.
California-based expansion goes beyond San Jose. Southwest added a set of new routes linking multiple California cities with key business and leisure hubs: San Francisco (SFO) to Austin, Texas (AUS); Sacramento to Austin; Sacramento to St. Louis; Oakland to Newark, New Jersey (EWR); and San Diego (SAN) to Newark. These services create new nonstop options for passengers traveling between Northern and Southern California and major Midwest and East Coast metros.
Other domestic nonstop introductions include a Fort Lauderdale (FLL)–Jacksonville, Florida pairing, a Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina–Kansas City, Missouri route, and the resumption or initiation of nonstop service between Austin and Indianapolis. These connections are aimed at improving point-to-point accessibility and reducing the need for travelers to connect through larger hubs.
For leisure travelers, the carrier began a weekly nonstop between Oakland and Orlando (MCO) last month, with plans to expand to daily frequencies beginning July 15. The increase to daily service is timed to meet seasonal demand and provide more options for both short vacation trips and longer stays.
Southwest also added seasonal international service on two leisure-oriented routes. The airline now operates weekly seasonal nonstop flights between Columbus, Ohio, and Cancún, and between New Orleans and Cancún. These routes cater to vacation travelers seeking direct access to popular beach destinations during peak travel periods.
The latest route rollouts reflect Southwest’s strategy of growing where demand supports point-to-point flying, connecting secondary cities directly and strengthening service on high-demand leisure corridors. By increasing nonstop options from several California airports and adding seasonal international links, Southwest aims to simplify travel itineraries and offer competitive alternatives to travelers who prefer fewer connections.
Passengers affected by the new routes can expect a variety of scheduling choices as frequencies ramp up through the spring and into the summer season. As always, travelers should check current schedules and fare options directly with the airline for the most up-to-date information on flight times and frequency.
