SAS Celebrates 50: Milestones, Innovations, and Future Plans

The first commercial airline to fly over the North Pole en route to the U.S. West Coast is celebrating its 50th anniversary. SAS reached that landmark achievement in 1954, and six decades later the carrier continues to expand its transatlantic services. In 2014, SAS reported growing passenger numbers and introduced five additional weekly departures while opening a new route that strengthens its Copenhagen hub connections to major U.S. gateways.

“SAS is seeing steady growth in demand for travel to the USA, and the reverse route from the U.S. to Scandinavia is also proving successful,” said Eivind Roald, executive vice president of sales and marketing at SAS.

As part of its network development, SAS operates a daily nonstop service between Copenhagen and Chicago, with one flight each day of the week. Following strong demand, the airline has also increased frequency on its Copenhagen–San Francisco route. From June 10 the San Francisco service adds a Tuesday departure, making it a daily flight as well.

“It is exactly one year since we launched the San Francisco route, and we have never before seen a route be so successful right from the start,” Roald added.
