Samsung Launches Galaxy Note 7 Exchange Booths at Airports

The saga of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 continues to unfold as safety concerns mount. Several incidents of the device catching fire or exploding on aircraft have prompted airlines and aviation authorities to take strict precautions. Some carriers now warn passengers not to power on the phone during flights, and others have implemented full bans on carrying the device aboard.

In response, Samsung has set up exchange booths at select airports in Australia, South Korea and the United States, with additional locations planned. These airport exchange points provide owners a straightforward way to turn in their Galaxy Note 7 devices.

Customers who hand in a Note 7 at these desks receive a $25 gift card. Alternatively, Samsung offers a $100 credit to customers who choose to swap the device for another Samsung phone; when that option is selected, personal data is transferred to the replacement device so users can retain their contacts, photos and settings.

Regulatory action has also been taken. The U.S. Department of Transportation has prohibited the device on flights, and Hong Kong International Airport announced a ban on the Galaxy Note 7 for all inbound and outbound flights from its terminals. These measures reflect widespread concern about inflight safety risks associated with the model.

To help travelers affected by these restrictions, Samsung operates temporary booths at major airports. At Hong Kong International Airport, a booth in Terminal 1 near check-in aisle D offers exchanges and provides temporary loan phones, although those loan units do not support transferring personal data. Samsung also provides courtesy phones at Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 3 for passengers who need immediate replacements while traveling.

These steps aim to reduce the safety risks posed by the Galaxy Note 7 and to give owners convenient options for exchanging their devices while traveling. Travelers who own the model are advised to follow airline and airport guidance, avoid charging or turning the device on if instructed, and seek out official Samsung exchange locations when possible to obtain a safe replacement.
