Salt Lake City International Airport is undergoing a major expansion that will add 15 new gates as part of a project costing more than $2.9 billion. Even with this investment, airport leaders warn the improvements may not fully meet future demand.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that interim airport director Kevin Robins believes the current program—featuring two new concourses and a rebuilt terminal scheduled for completion in 2020—might only accommodate growth for the next five years.
The redevelopment will replace the airport’s existing terminal and concourses. However, Mike Williams, the terminal redevelopment project director, says the surge in passenger demand could eventually require additional facilities, possibly a third or fourth terminal, to handle sustained growth.
“We continue to face the good problem of growing traffic and not enough rooms at the inn to be able to accommodate,” Williams said, describing the challenge of matching facilities to rising passenger numbers.
Several carriers, including Delta, Southwest, United and KLM, have recently expanded service at Salt Lake City. The airport was originally designed for about 10 million passengers a year but now handles roughly twice that volume. Salt Lake City International is Delta’s fourth-largest U.S. hub and ranks among the nation’s busiest airports by passenger traffic.
The current expansion focuses on improving capacity and passenger experience: new gates, modernized concourses, and an updated terminal design aimed at streamlining connections and operations. These upgrades are intended to reduce congestion during peak travel periods and support future airline growth in the near term.
Despite these immediate improvements, planners emphasize the importance of ongoing evaluation and long-term planning. If passenger volumes continue to rise beyond projections, the airport may need to consider further construction phases, additional terminals, or other capacity-enhancing measures to maintain service levels and operational efficiency.
For now, the $2.9 billion project represents a significant step toward modernizing Salt Lake City International Airport. Yet airport officials acknowledge that air travel trends and route expansions by major carriers could require additional investments to meet sustained demand in the years ahead.
