Renovated Boutique Tented Lodge Reveals New Luxury Upgrades

Chaka Camps — a collection of boutique tented lodges known for delivering intimate, luxury safari experiences — has completed an extensive renovation program carried out over the winter months. The upgrades introduce a refreshed aesthetic and improved guest amenities, timed to welcome visitors for the 2019 Ndutu calving season and beyond.

The renovation covered every tent in the camp and focused on improving comfort, privacy and connection with the surrounding Serengeti landscape. All tent canvases were reworked and updated to a new tan color palette that brightens interiors while maintaining a natural, low-impact appearance that blends with the plains. Internally, the layout and finishes were rethought to make the most of available space and views.

Chaka Camps now offers 11 bedroom tents, each with an en-suite bathroom featuring modern fixtures. Bathrooms were expanded and reconfigured to provide more space and privacy, and now include flush toilets and bucket showers. New hardwood decking enhances durability and warmth underfoot, while double sink basins and a separate dressing area improve convenience for couples and families. The changes were made with careful attention to guest experience — from morning routines to evening relaxation — while retaining the camp’s signature tented character.

Every piece of furniture was reviewed and many items were replaced or rebuilt to match the updated design language. New armchairs, bed-end units, carpets, verandah seating and wardrobes contribute to a cohesive look and an elevated feel. Tent layouts have been adjusted so guests can enjoy direct views across the Serengeti plains from the comfort of their beds, making wildlife sightings a more immediate and personal experience.

Project management and local craftsmanship were key elements of the renovation. “The renovation of Chaka Camp was a major undertaking and involved working with many different Arusha-based suppliers and designers over several months,” said Omary Ridhiwan, general manager, Chaka Camps Arusha. “The new tents were sewn on site at the Chaka Camps office in Arusha and many furniture pieces were constructed at our office complex as well. We are excited about the new look of Chaka and hope our guests enjoy their holidays with us!”

Chaka Camps operates a handful of distinct properties across northern Tanzania, each designed to offer a slightly different Serengeti experience. Kiota Camp remains permanently located in the Central Serengeti to provide year-round game viewing and consistent access to key wildlife activity. Kichuguu Camp, which opened in June 2017, is situated near the Tarangire River basin and the Silale Swamp, offering guests an opportunity to explore a contrasting ecosystem with its own seasonal rhythms and wildlife concentrations.

The renovation aims not only to refresh aesthetics but also to reinforce Chaka Camps’ commitment to quality safari hospitality delivered with local involvement. By sourcing tent canvases, furnishings and construction services locally in Arusha, the project supported regional craftsmen and suppliers while enabling the camp to better manage ongoing maintenance and future upgrades.

Practical enhancements combined with stylistic updates make the camp well suited to both photographic safaris and relaxed nature-focused stays. Guests can expect improved interior comfort, more functional bathrooms and changing areas, and enhanced outdoor living spaces that encourage longer moments spent on the verandah watching plains life unfold.

Chaka Camps continues to position itself as a boutique option for travelers seeking a refined, intimate encounter with East Africa’s wildlife. With the recent renovations complete, the properties are prepared to welcome guests for peak wildlife events such as the Ndutu calving season, as well as for quiet, off-peak visits for those who prefer a less crowded experience.

Standard rates at Chaka Camps start from $400 per night, reflecting the upgraded accommodation, personalized service and prime access to Tanzania’s remarkable wildlife regions.
