Renaissance Revival: Inside a Tuscan Estate Reimagined for Today

Situated in the rolling Chianti hills of Tuscany, Vignamaggio is a restored Renaissance estate that welcomes travelers to explore vineyards, olive groves, farmhouses and more after a careful, decade-long restoration. The property has been in operation for over 600 years and is associated by local tradition with Leonardo da Vinci and the creation of the Mona Lisa.

Set across 65 hectares of vines, the estate includes historic cellars producing acclaimed Chianti Classico. At its heart stands Il Borgo, a 14th-century villa thoughtfully restored as an elegant event venue. The villa’s interiors favor a soft palette of natural tones and reflect architectural details introduced during the Habsburg-Lorraine period in Florence. Il Borgo offers a frescoed chapel, a winter garden, a pool house with a heated pool, 12 suites and other refined spaces. The villa is available for private hire with a minimum two-night stay.

Around the estate are several renovated Tuscan farmhouses, each with its own character and designed to make the most of indoor and outdoor living. These self-catering properties range from intimate retreats to large group homes with private pools and expansive views. Options include Il Casolese, a nine-bedroom house with an infinity pool overlooking olive groves; L’Orto, a riverside estate that accommodates up to 18 guests on the banks of the Greve; and Il Prato, a cluster of three farmhouses set between oak woods and vineyards for groups of up to 22.

La Pensione, the estate’s guest house, was recently refurbished and added two new suites for the summer season. Its 19 guestrooms are each inspired by one of the love stories from Renaissance writer Giovanni Boccaccio, combining period touches with modern comfort. La Pensione also includes welcoming lounges, a compact library and a lavender-fringed pool for guests to enjoy.

Vignamaggio continues to expand its offerings. In December, the estate will open La Fattoria, a 120-seat vineyard-view restaurant that highlights produce grown on the property. Guests will also find an on-site farm shop and deli stocking the estate’s wines, and they can observe artisans curing meats and making traditional Italian cheeses.

Looking ahead, the estate plans to open Renaissance Villa Vignamaggio as a 19-suite hotel in summer 2024, further enhancing its range of accommodations and experiences in the heart of Chianti.
