Traveling to and from Ecuador has become more convenient with the opening of the new Mariscal Antonio José de Sucre International Airport (UIO) in Quito. Designed to accommodate growing passenger demand, the airport is expected to handle more than five million travelers in its first year of operation.
Situated approximately 26 miles from central Quito, the new facility features longer runways than the previous airport, enabling more direct long‑haul flights. Enhanced immigration facilities and an expanded baggage system are in place to manage increased passenger flows: the number of immigration counters has been raised to reduce wait times, and the upgraded baggage system supports roughly double the handling capacity of the former airport.
Passengers will find an improved commercial experience as well. A new duty‑free store is available, and up to 20 additional retail outlets are scheduled to open during the year, offering a wider selection of dining and shopping options for travelers.
The airport’s modernized infrastructure aims to streamline connections for both international and domestic flights, while providing a more comfortable transit experience. With its expanded capacity and updated amenities, UIO positions Quito as a more accessible hub for visitors to Ecuador and for locals traveling abroad.
For travelers planning a trip, the new airport’s increased capacity and facilities should mean fewer delays, better services, and more direct route options. This development marks a significant upgrade in Ecuador’s aviation infrastructure and supports the country’s growing tourism and business travel needs.
