Throughout the summer and into early autumn, events across England will mark the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. From July 11–14, holders of Royal Warrants—designated official suppliers to the households of The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and The Prince of Wales—will take part in the Coronation Festival held in the gardens of Buckingham Palace. The festival includes daytime exhibits and evening musical performances.
On June 13, Westminster Abbey will present a Coronation Gala featuring music performed by the Quire of Westminster Abbey under the direction of organist James O’Donnell. Running until Sept. 30, the Abbey is also hosting a free retrospective on The Queen’s 1953 coronation that showcases archival photographs, many on display for the first time, alongside selected news images provided in partnership with Getty Images (Abbey admission charges apply). From June 20–July 6, director Richard Jones stages a new production of Gloriana—the opera commissioned by the Royal Opera House to mark the 1953 coronation, composed by Benjamin Britten.
These events provide a mix of historical context, music and visual archives that celebrate the coronation’s legacy while offering a range of cultural experiences across central London venues.
