In 2016, U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) data show that, on average, nine travelers per day attempted to board flights with firearms in their carry-on luggage. These incidents led to the seizure of 3,391 guns at airport security checkpoints across the country.
Of the firearms confiscated, 2,815 were loaded, underscoring significant safety risks at screening areas. The total number of seizures marked a 28 percent rise from 2015, continuing a trend of increasing finds over the past decade. For comparison, TSA reported just 660 firearms discovered at checkpoints in 2005.
The largest numbers of carrying incidents were recorded at several major hubs, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. These high-traffic airports accounted for a notable share of the overall firearm discoveries.
TSA rules clearly prohibit passengers from carrying any firearm in carry-on baggage. Passengers may, however, transport unloaded firearms in checked luggage when they follow TSA and airline requirements for secure packaging and proper declaration.
Incidents of weapons at airports raise broader safety concerns, particularly following high-profile cases such as the mass shooting at Fort Lauderdale in January, where the suspected perpetrator allegedly removed a gun and ammunition from a checked bag before opening fire in the baggage claim area, resulting in multiple fatalities. Such events highlight the importance of strict adherence to screening procedures, responsible firearm storage in checked baggage, and continued vigilance by passengers and security personnel.
Improving public awareness about TSA firearm policies, ensuring compliance with airline and federal regulations for transporting firearms in checked baggage, and maintaining robust screening practices remain essential to preventing dangerous items from reaching passenger areas. For travelers who plan to transport firearms, careful preparation—unloading weapons, using approved locking cases, and declaring firearms at check-in—can reduce the risk of confiscation and enhance safety for everyone in the airport environment.
