Norwegian Air Launches Direct U.S. Flights to Martinique

Three gateways in the northeastern United States will gain direct service to Fort-de-France, Martinique (FDF) with the introduction of new non-stop flights from New York (JFK), Boston (BOS) and Baltimore (BWI). Norwegian Air Shuttle will begin the routes later this year, making Martinique directly accessible from the U.S. Northeast for the first time in more than two decades.

These nonstop connections restore a long-absent direct link between the region and the French Caribbean island. The new service aims to provide convenient travel options for tourists, business travelers and the sizable Caribbean diaspora residing in the Northeast, as well as to strengthen ties in trade, culture and tourism between Martinique and the eastern United States.

Airline and aircraft details

Norwegian Air Shuttle plans to operate the routes using Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Each jet is configured with 186 seats and offers free in-flight WiFi, improving the onboard experience for passengers traveling between the U.S. and Fort-de-France. The 737-800 is well-suited for short- to medium-haul international routes and provides an efficient balance of comfort and capacity for these services.

Schedule and operational impact

Service is scheduled to begin on December 3. Adding nonstop flights from New York, Boston and Baltimore will reduce travel time for many passengers by eliminating the need for connections through other hubs. For the travel industry, these routes are expected to boost visitor numbers to Martinique during both winter and shoulder seasons, and to offer more predictable connectivity for residents and travelers moving between the island and the northeastern U.S.

Economic and tourism benefits

The launch of nonstop service carries potential economic benefits for Martinique and regional partners. Easier access from major northeastern population centers can increase inbound tourism, support local businesses that rely on visitor spending, and create more opportunities for cultural and commercial exchange. The flights also complement Martinique’s broader strategy to grow U.S. arrivals, building on prior efforts to re-establish links from the United States and to expand visitor channels such as cruise traffic.

Local perspective

Muriel Wiltord, director Americas for the Martinique Promotion Bureau, described the new routes as “a significant step forward” in the island’s U.S. development strategy. The service builds on earlier success in restoring direct U.S. air links via Miami and follows growth in cruise arrivals, both of which have helped broaden the island’s access to American travelers.

Travel considerations

Travelers planning trips to Martinique should review passport and entry requirements, check baggage allowances and verify schedules directly with the airline as the launch date approaches. Seasonal demand, promotional fares and flight frequency will influence availability, so early planning is recommended for those seeking the most convenient itineraries.

Overall, the introduction of nonstop flights from JFK, BOS and BWI represents a meaningful enhancement of air connectivity between the northeastern United States and Martinique, promising simpler travel, economic opportunities and stronger ties between the regions.
