Norwegian has introduced a new direct service between London and Rio de Janeiro, expanding its South American network. The route launches March 31, 2019, and links Rio de Janeiro–Galeão (GIG) with London Gatwick Airport, extending Norwegian’s existing London–Buenos Aires (EZE) operation.
The service will operate four times per week using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, offering modern long-haul comfort and improved connectivity for both leisure and business travelers.
“We’re building on our expansive global network by launching our first flights to Brazil and making South America available to even more people. Our new Rio de Janeiro route breaks the monopoly on direct flights between the UK and Brazil as we’re committed to lowering fares and making travel more affordable for all leisure and business travelers,” said Bjørn Kjos, chief executive officer of Norwegian.
Alongside the new London–Rio schedule, Norwegian will increase frequency on its Gatwick–Buenos Aires service, strengthening its overall presence in South America and providing passengers with more travel options and flexible connections across the region.
Fred Arruda, Brazil’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, welcomed the new link: “The new direct flight from London to Rio de Janeiro by Norwegian is excellent news for connectivity between Brazil and the United Kingdom. It will certainly increase the flow of tourists, allowing more British people to enjoy the beauties of Brazil. It will also help to create jobs in our country and improve competition, potentially reducing costs for passengers. For that, we praise Norwegian’s announcement of the new route.”
This new route is positioned to enhance tourism and business ties between the UK and Brazil by offering more competitive fares, additional seat capacity, and a contemporary aircraft experience. Travelers can expect direct access to Rio’s cultural attractions and events with a convenient connection from London Gatwick on a carrier focused on expanding affordable long-haul travel.
