Travelers who often visit Hong Kong have reason to celebrate this New Year’s Eve: 2018 brings several new nonstop routes and the increased competition could help lower airfares.
Beginning in 2018, Hong Kong Airlines will put Airbus A350 aircraft into service, and the timing coincides with the launch of new nonstop connections. The carrier has announced plans to introduce direct flights from New York City (JFK) and San Francisco (SFO) to Hong Kong (HKG). These routes will join the airline’s existing U.S. service between Los Angeles (LAX) and Hong Kong. Economy fares for the New York–Hong Kong nonstop are expected to start at approximately $790.
Alongside the new routes and aircraft, Hong Kong Airlines will open a VIP lounge at Hong Kong International Airport. The new Autus Club spans about 13,000 square feet and is intended to offer premium amenities for frequent flyers and business travelers.
The introduction of the A350s and expanded nonstop service reflects broader growth in long-haul travel options to and from Hong Kong. More nonstop flights reduce travel time and provide travelers with greater choice, which can pressure airlines to offer more competitive pricing. For passengers traveling between the U.S. and Hong Kong, the added nonstop options from New York and San Francisco create alternatives to the existing Los Angeles link, making it easier to find schedules and fares that fit individual needs.
Business travelers stand to benefit from the combination of newer aircraft and an upgraded lounge experience. The A350 is designed for long-haul comfort, often featuring improved cabin pressurization, quieter cabins and more modern inflight amenities compared with older widebody planes. The Autus Club aims to complement these onboard improvements with on-the-ground services such as comfortable seating, workspaces, and dedicated customer assistance, enhancing the overall travel experience for those who value convenience and comfort.
For leisure travelers, the new nonstop routes can reduce total travel time and simplify itineraries. Seasonal demand and competitive pricing around the start of the service may produce attractive introductory fares, while the added capacity could make it easier to find award seats or last-minute options.
Overall, the combination of Airbus A350 deployment, new nonstop U.S. routes and the launch of a sizable VIP lounge positions Hong Kong Airlines to offer a more robust product for both business and leisure travelers heading to and from Hong Kong in 2018.
