The TEX Rail commuter line in Fort Worth, Texas, is under construction and will include a station at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).
The $500 million project begins in downtown Fort Worth and will run approximately 27 miles, terminating at DFW’s Terminal B where a $28.4 million station will be constructed.
“We’re excited about that. We’re on track,” said Sean Donohue, chief executive of DFW Airport. “The look and feel of the station will be very similar to the DART station at Terminal A. We’ll pretty much use the same design.”
Service is planned to start in late 2018 with trains running about every 30 minutes. DFW is already served by the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) light-rail line, which stops at Terminal A; plans call for a pedestrian connection between the two stations to facilitate transfers.
The new TEX Rail line will serve communities west of the airport, including Fort Worth and North Richland Hills, while DART’s Orange Line serves communities to the east such as Dallas, Irving, Richardson and Plano. Initial projections estimate more than 8,000 daily riders in the early years, growing to roughly 13,000 daily riders by 2035.
In addition to regional rail connections, the airport operates a free Skylink light-rail people mover that links all five terminals, providing convenient transfers within the airport complex.
