The first five new coaches for the Caledonian Sleeper arrived in Glasgow via the Channel Tunnel in January as part of the service’s relaunch. These units are the first delivery from Spanish manufacturer CAF, which is supplying a total of 75 coaches.
These modern cars will replace the current British Rail–era coaches that have been in use since the 1980s and offer a significant uplift in comfort and facilities.
“The Caledonian Sleeper is an iconic rail service recognised in Scotland and across the world. The introduction of new rolling stock with features new to U.K. rail can only enhance its reputation,” said Humza Yousaf, the United Kingdom’s minister for transport and the islands.
New onboard features include en-suite facilities in certain accommodation types, a notable addition compared with the existing trains. Passengers who book a private room will be guaranteed single occupancy unless they choose to share with a partner.
As expected with upgraded rolling stock and improved amenities, fares have been set to reflect the higher standard. Current one-way fares are structured as follows:
- Comfort seats from £45
- Classic rooms (twin or single) from £85 per person
- Club rooms (en-suite) from £125 per person
- Suites (double bed, en-suite) from £200 per person
The new coaches enter service first on the Lowlander route between London Euston and Scotland’s central belt, serving Edinburgh and Glasgow. Following this initial deployment, they will be rolled out on other overnight routes connecting London with Aberdeen, Inverness and Fort William.
The refreshed fleet aims to modernise overnight travel to and from Scotland, improving passenger comfort and bringing new features to long-distance rail services within the U.K.
